The project consisted of a new Fire Station 2 building constructed at 952 East Exchange Street. The two-story building features an upper level with three full-length apparatus bays and a walk-out lower level. The 14,455 square-foot building spans a one-acre site with a 12-foot grade change. The services provided by G. Stephens, Inc. (GSI) included Construction Phase Management and Inspections. Significant historic artifacts from previous Fire Stations were salvaged, incorporated into the building, or relocated on the property, including an 1880s statue and fountain, memorials to fallen firefighters, and building dedication stones.
Civil work included site preparation, site utilities, stormwater management, grading, concrete maintenance and repair, concrete paving, landscaping, and site furniture. Structural systems included masonry bearing walls and steel framing on concrete foundations, floor slabs, and decks. The roof system was comprised of prefabricated metal trusses.
GSI began its services in late August 2018, at which time the 100% design documents had been completed and were under review by the City/County building departments. In managing the project for the City of Akron, GSI tracked and managed the daily field reports, submittal logs, RFI logs, and change order logs. GSI was also responsible for monitoring and controlling the budget, schedule, and quality. GSI provided inspection and documentation of all aspects of construction, in accordance with the plans and specifications. Activities included conducting progress and coordination meetings, providing documentation, and monitoring the contractor’s work progress, processing and tracking all shop drawings and submittals, coordinating all payroll and pay estimates, and monitoring DBE inclusion and local workforce participation requirements.
